Flagler Beach is a small city located in Flagler County, Florida, United States. The city was named after Henry Flagler, an American industrialist and co-founder of Standard Oil, who was instrumental in the development of Florida’s east coast.
The area where Flagler Beach now stands was originally inhabited by Timucuan Indians before being settled by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. The area remained sparsely populated until the late 19th century when Henry Flagler began constructing the Florida East Coast Railway along the east coast of Florida. In 1915, Flagler opened the Flagler Hotel in Flagler Beach, which became a popular destination for tourists.
During World War II, Flagler Beach was used by the U.S. Army as a training site for amphibious operations. After the war, the city began to grow as more people discovered the area’s natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere. In 1952, the city was officially incorporated.
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Flagler Beach continued to develop as a tourist destination, with new hotels and attractions being built. In the 1970s, however, the city faced challenges due to the construction of Interstate 95, which bypassed the city and reduced its importance as a transportation hub.
Today, Flagler Beach remains a popular vacation spot known for its miles of pristine beaches, vibrant downtown area, and small-town charm. The city has worked to preserve its natural beauty and protect its environment, including its famous dunes system. Flagler Beach also hosts several annual events, including the Flagler Beach Pirate Invasion and the Flagler Beach Christmas Parade.
I can not wait to participate in all things Flagler Beach over the next up coming years.
